What is Goshikinuma?

In the Urabandai area of Fukushima lies Goshikinuma, a cluster of around 30 ponds and lakes, each glowing with its own mysterious color. The area is part of Bandai-Asahi National Park, known for its unspoiled nature.
Goshikinuma was created after the 1888 eruption of Mount Bandai, when rivers were blocked by volcanic debris, forming the lakes. Minerals and algae in the water refract light, producing striking hues—emerald green, turquoise blue, even reddish tones. Depending on the season, weather, and angle, the colors shift, making each visit unique.
